Thing 23

This has been a very interesting learning experience. Library 2.0 is a great way to get people more familar with the web and all of its tools.

I really like the way that some staff people are making use of YouTube. Great way to get library news out there.

Google docs could be useful though with the way our network works, sharing documents is relatively easy for us. Also with security the way it is on the internet, I don't think I would really want to share a lot of documents that way.

RSS feeds are pretty simple, but to me so is acutally plugging in the website I want to view. Such as CNN or WLOS for that matter. But now I know what an RSS feed is and in the beginning....well...

So all of this put together would and will be helpful at some point in time for myself or others that I might help. It would be more useful if I'm able to afford anything besides dial-up at my home. No we can't get highspeed unless we go to space to get it.

Thanks to the Staff Development group for all the work that was put into this venture!

Alas though, this will probably be my last blog.

I might possibly use Netlibrary every once in a while since it lets you access ebooks, eJournals and eAudiobooks. It could possibly be pretty interesting to use with an MP3. Right now though I really like to acutally read the book and not listen, but I can see its use for folks that have poor eyesight as my mom and dad both do. The real challenge would be teaching them to use these tools. As they have vowed never to use computers or anything like them. Huh.

My mom and dad aside, a lot of other people could really get use out of this tool and download books etc. for trips. And wonder of wonder it's free!

I checked into the library podcast and couldn't really find anything that rings a bell with me. I mostly typed in Podcast in Google search to find anything to do with library podcast. Not really all that much available that I could see that would interest me. Very few things dealing with libraries, so that could be an open market. I think it would be great if some of the Youth folks looked into Podcasts for children's storytelling.

RSS feed wise, I could link one to my feeds, but probably would never check it because I would forget about it.

I explored the self publishing site LULU. Reminds me too much of some of the things that get donated to the library at times. It is very nice of them to donate but well........I suppose it could be useful to get informational papers published and out there. Or to use as an online diary. Wouldn't that be weird? Rated it 5 out of 10.

So far after viewing some of the things that can be done, I can see where it might be useful to use this in sharing non-secure documents. I suppose you could even post library announcements. Would need to be linked to the main library website.

I had a little trouble with the instructions at first. Mainly because I was just skimming through them. I added my blog to the favorites and of course I dabbled in the fav restaurants and movies. I thought all of this was good for practicing with links. If we ever get into the business.

I think 23 Things is a fine way for staff members to see what will be coming in the future. It's hard for me to think that at some point in time books may well all be digitized. Oh yeah it's coming. Better to stock up now.

We all know things are getting more and more technology related. They even had to install mini-computers to change gas prices daily. Remember, only one key stroke and we'll be at $7.00 a gallon. So I hear.

Knowing these trends can really help with conversations with young adult patrons. It can't hurt to be 'groovin in the know'.

I have been a user of Wikis for a little while now, mostly through the SirsiDynix website. It is a great place for information to the newbies and even the more advanced users. But I think you would need to be very careful when using Wikis for the general public as just about anyone could add to these.

I really liked Google Books. Though it could present a problem for copyright along the same lines as music downloads at some point in time. This could be very cool to link to our homepage to give previews to a few of the more popular books. Or to highlight a book per week.

Yet another sign in page. How many passwords can you keep up with. I found this an OK experience, but probably would never use. I have plenty of bookmarks to keep up with too. Not interested really.

The tech thing I'm interested in is you-tube. But I mostly like to view them. I have seen other posts for the library and some of the videos are very nice. This is a good way to reach people with programs etc. MP3-player please.

Below is a news story I found that sounded too weird.

CNN) -- Muskrat holes weakened a Mississippi River levee on Friday, allowing floodwaters to pour into Lincoln County, Missouri, just north of St. Louis, officials said.

Sheriff's deputies alerted residents to evacuate, yelling "get out, the levee broke" as they went door-to-door in the affected areas, according to an Associated Press report.
Winfield resident Debbie Halcomb, 52, heard warning sirens and knew her worst fears were realized, the AP reported.
"I was hoping it would hold, but it didn't," the AP quoted Halcomb as saying. "I think we probably lost it on this last bunch of rain."

The river had been forecast to crest at 37½ feet on Saturday. The levee it broke around 5:30 a.m. Friday.
The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers had been fighting "down slides" that had occurred in two separate 100-foot-sections of the levee in the past several days. Down slides occur when portions of the earthen levee shift because of water seepage.
The Corps said that the Mississippi, having exceeded the original levee, was being held back by sandbags placed by volunteers and the National Guard.

The levee was the last one remaining in Lincoln County and was protecting about 100 homes. Almost 700 homes in the area have been damaged by floodwater.

So I explored Flicker. Opened an account and uploaded a picture from my e-mail. Pretty simple to do. I looked around some more at other pics. By typing in FRL I saw a lot of pictures posted from the library. Many, many, many pictures from Cashiers. Nice. AIT as well. After doing all that I deleted the account. What??? Yes there were several warnings, but I did it anyway.

I don't really think this is a way that I would necessarily look info up on the Internet. I'm not exactly sure I'm doing this the way it is supposed to be done though. Blogging seems to be just a way to share your own opinion. I have no problems doing that when talking to someone for real. I don't think I need a blog to do that. Just ask Diann.

I'm still adding to this post as I go along. I browsed through some of the suggested sites. My favorite way to find RSS feeds is by searching in Google reader, though I did find some by just typing in the Google search field. I think I've RSS'd enough for now.

I'm not real sure that I enjoy blogging. But you might notice that Ihave been adding a few things to my page. I signed up with Google Reader and have managed to add a couple of RSS feeds to my blog. There is probably more to this particular thing, so I will add more to this post later.

I just couldn't resist this. I had to put some video in my blog. Well at least I think I did. I'll get back to you on that.

I have signed up for a few RSS feeds with Google Reader. There are a lot of different news feeds, sports feeds and whatever feeds. I'm still checking all this out. I am trying to figure out exactly how to share those with people.

OK. Here I am and this is my first blog. Ever. I did see somewhere in the instructions that we are supposed to use at least 125 words! I don't know that I have that many in my vocab, though I was told recently that I repeat myself an awful lot. Well.

For me the most difficult 7 1/2 habits is probably viewing problems as challenges. To me problems are just things to get through and move on. I really like to ignore problems and hope they go away eventually. But such is not usually the case. Not a challenge necessarily, but always a lesson to be had I guess. And I suppose that this is the one I should work on. I see a lot of eye-rolling and sighing in my future.

The easiest might possibly be technology. The jury's still out on that. Not to say technology is easy for me, but that I don't necessarily feel intimidated by it and so will jump right in and play with things until I get them to work. Or break them. Matters not to me. Except for Hi-def TVs. I don't touch those.

Maybe it won't be so hard to use 125 words after all.
